You could almost say it enjoys a bit of neglect, as it won’t complain if you forget to water it or if it doesn’t get enough light. It’s an excellent plant for beginners or anyone who doesn’t enjoy frequent watering and care, yet still wants a touch of greenery in their space.

PLANT CARE

Light     It thrives best in a bright spot with indirect light. It also tolerates direct light and darker corners, making it very adaptable to different lighting conditions.

Water    Water sparingly. Allow the soil to dry out completely between waterings. In winter, the plant requires less water. Overwatering can quickly lead to root rot. If the soil stays wet for a long time, the plant may not be getting enough light or may be planted in an unsuitable substrate.

Humidity     It does very well in normal household humidity and actually thrives in a drier environment. It does not like high humidity or misting of the leaves.

Do you need to improve humidity level in your place? Here are our recommendations.

Common problems and solutions

  1. Soft or yellow leaves – The plant has most likely been overwatered. Reduce watering and check the condition of the rhizomes; repot if necessary. When watering, avoid getting the leaves wet, as this can quickly lead to rot.
  2. Soft rhizomes in the soil – The plant has most likely been overwatered, causing root rot. Remove any rotten parts and repot in well aerated soil mix.
  3. Pests -  not very common. As a preventive, you can treat the plant with neem oil.

Pro tip    Water by soaking from below. This keeps the top layer of soil drier and reduces the risk of rhizome rot in the soil.
