Sansevieria, also known as Snake plant or mother-in-law’s tongue, is a classic plant adapted to a wide range of conditions, earning its reputation as the queen of nearly indestructible houseplants. Its fleshy, spear-shaped leaves store enough water to survive long periods without watering. Beyond its toughness, it is also known for its air-purifying qualities and decorative patterns that brighten any space. It is one of those plants that truly enjoys a bit of neglect! The most common care mistakes are overwatering or repotting too quickly into a pot that is too large. Sansevierias prefer to be slightly root-bound and watered only when the soil is completely dry.

PLANT CARE

Light    It feels best in a bright space with indirect light. It also tolerates direct light and darker corners well, making it a very adaptable plant when it comes to lighting conditions.

Water    Water sparingly. Allow the soil to dry out completely between waterings. In winter, the plant requires less water. Overwatering can quickly lead to root rot. If the soil stays wet for an extended period, the plant may not be getting enough light or may be planted in an unsuitable substrate.

Humidity    It does very well in normal household humidity and actually thrives in a drier environment. It does not like high humidity or misting of the leaves.

Do you need to improve humidity level in your place? Here are our recommendations.

Common problems and solutions

  1. Brown leaf tips – Most often caused by dry air. This is quite common and normal for this plant and can be difficult to prevent.
  2. Soft leaves – The plant has most likely been overwatered. Reduce watering and check the condition of the roots; repot if necessary. When watering, avoid getting the leaves wet, as this can quickly lead to rot.
  3. Pests – Mealybugs are particularly fond of this plant. Leaves may appear unusually shaped or discolored, sometimes with brown spots and white fuzzy pests. Try washing the leaves and treating the plant with neem oil.

Pro tip     Rotate the plant occasionally to encourage more even growth.
